The Cashmore Poetry Competition 2020

On Tuesday 9th June, students from Year 5 and 6, Third Form and Fourth Form competed in the Cashmore Poetry Competition showing off their creativity in French, Spanish and German.

The event was held as a webinar and recordings of the students were played for the judges; Amandine Smilevich, Christian Hughes and Graham Hartley, who had the very hard job of choosing a winner and a runner up for each category.

Junior students in Year 5 recited a poem in Spanish “Llega el invierno” and their recordings were accompanied by wonderful illustrations of the poem. The only contestant in Year 6 recorded herself in a video that made Mrs Smilevich feel at home: the poem in French was “Les maths, je n’aime pas ça”.

Senior students chose a variety of poetry structures, but there were common themes that showed maturity and introspection, such as the effects of the current lockdown, the global pandemic and racism. We were very proud to see such a level of deep content together with accuracy in pronunciation and grammar.

Our judges did not find it easy to decide on finalists, but at the end we were delighted to announce the following winners:

Junior Category:
Winner - Scarlett O’Driscoll
Runner up - Shola Hone

Year 7:
Winner - Finlay Painter
Runner up - Summer Adams

Year 8:
Winner - George Leite
Runner up - Phoebe Wring

Year 9:
Winner - Alexander Van Roy
Runner up - Kerri Ankobia

Special thanks to the hard working MFL teachers, to all parents, guardians and heads of school, staff and students who tuned in to watch the live event, to our judges and to the technical team who made this event possible. And of course, thanks to all students who took part with their enthusiasm.

Muchas gracias!
