Sidcot's Global Outlook: How We Encourage and Celebrate All Nationalities and Points Of View

George Fox, the founder of Quakerism, encouraged everyone to “walk cheerfully over the world (…) and be patterns and examples”. At Sidcot, where Quaker values shape the way we learn and live, diversity isn’t just welcomed: it’s embraced within our community and has been for centuries!

Did you know that the first international boarder who studied at Sidcot School was born in New York in 1807? Since then, students from all over the world have joined our school. From Mongolia’s vast steppes to Papua New Guinea’s volcanoes, through the Ural Mountains and Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour, Sidcot alumni proudly represent over 70 countries! In a world that is more connected than ever, nurturing the understanding of different nationalities and perspectives encourages connections that challenge stereotypes, foster inclusion, and build a community where every voice matters.

With students and staff from a wide range of nationalities and backgrounds, the school provides a unique environment where the constant celebration of important festivals and traditions enriches learning and community life. In the spirit of the School House Boys' motto: “Every Country, My Country and Every Man, My Brother”, the strong sense of camaraderie is evident and permeates throughout the school community. By showcasing as many festivals and traditions as possible, we offer our students a chance to bring a bit of home life to school and share with others what makes their rich and eclectic cultural background such a huge part of who they are as individuals. Whether the event is a traditional one (St Niklas Day, Lunar New Year or International Women's Day, for example) or a more religious one such as Ramadan or Holi, it is not uncommon for our students to celebrate all together, but also to present assemblies based on those international events. It’s inspiring to see them speak confidently, often in a second or third language, about their cultures and experiences. It is always a real privilege to witness their stories come to life.

It never ceases to amaze me how people from such diverse cultural backgrounds can live together in perfect harmony under the same roof. I believe international leaders today could take a leaf out of our students’ books!
