From the Art Department
Week ending 27 May 2016
It is always good to hear from old scholars, particularly so for us to hear from those who have been really keen on Art while studying here, and gone on to study and practise Art on leaving.
In these days of social media we often get to hear through Facebook postings, which is how we learned this week of the achievements of Chloe Monks (below) who has received an award for “Integration of Theory and Practice” from CSAD (Cardiff), while completing a degree in Ceramics. She receives her result on Friday of this week, and we look forward to hearing how she does.
Similarly through Facebook, I hear regularly from another of our Sidcot Ceramicists, Adam Buick, who left many many years ago. He has since built up a business in Wales as a studio potter, creating beautiful ceramic ware (see some of his work pictured above). Adam has an open studio and kiln opening this coming Saturday, 28 May, at his studio in St David’s, Wales. Have a look at his website www.adambuick.com
We would love to hear from any other Arty old scholars, to find out where you are and what you have been doing.

If you go down to the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise… no picnic though – a very hard hitting exhibition by environmental campaigner and renown photographer Mark Edwards (old scholar of another UK Quaker school, Sibford). Mark has lent us two exhibitions, one which is mounted in the Arts Centre, ‘Hard Rain’, and the other ‘Whole Earth’ runs all the way up Newcombe Drive, alongside Tom’s field, and up towards Newcombe Dell.
Hard Rain is a collection of images, many taken by Mark, some by other famous photographers, with each image illustrating a line from the dystopian Bob Dylan song ‘Hard Rain’. It is a very hard hitting exhibition, very thought provoking, and in places very disturbing.
Whole Earth’ is a series of panels with text and images, aimed at university students, the generation that will be taking on stewardship for this beautiful planet, and perhaps putting all of their ingenuity into reversing some of the terrible impact that mankind have collectively been inflicting on her.
Both exhibitions are part of Mark Edwards Hard Rain project – www.hardrainproject.com
Alongside these two professional exhibitions, we have mounted an exhibition of paintings by Gabriel Roux-Elms, one of our Lower Sixth Fine Art students. Gabz has been inspired by the work of American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, developing his own painting style from this inspiration, which is thought provoking, highly coloured, slightly disturbing, but also playful and entertaining. Again, well worth a visit if you are near the Arts Centre.
