The Cashmore Poetry Competition 2015

The Cashmore Poetry Competition 2015

On Thursday 30 April students from Years 5–9 gathered for the annual poetry competition run by the Modern Languages Department. The Junior School Hall was a lovely, sunny location for this celebration of the poetry written in three of the languages we teach at Sidcot. Students in Years 5 & 6 had learnt a poem in French about the alphabet and Years 7 and above had written their own poems for performance. Our judges were all native speakers of the languages, Céline Potts for French, Ingrid Schaffelhofer for German and returning to Sidcot, having done part of her teacher training with us last year, was Natalia Paul for Spanish.

We started the competition with three poems read by some of our native speaking students and then it was the turn of the competitors. While the judges deliberated, students from the Sixth Form served refreshments and finally it was time for the results which were as follows:

Runners up in the Junior School category were Eddy Binks and Oliver Lamont. The winner in this category was Thomas Robbins. In Year 7 the joint winners were Beau Ashbee and Verity Mann. Maddy Northcott won the Year 8 category and the Year 9 winner was Clara Mann.

Our congratulations and thanks go to all the competitors. We heard thoughtful, clever and funny poems and the students’ creativity and willingness to live adventurously by standing up to perform in a foreign language made us very proud.
