Coast-2-Coast
Update
Six members of County Contractors’ head office team, including Sidcot parents Pete Mercer (thrid from left) and Kevin Lee (far right), swapped their hard hats for cycle helmets and rode a gruelling 260-mile route that swept across England.
Departing from Botany Bay, Kent on 23 September, the team crossed the finish line just three days later on 25 September on Weston-super-Mare’s iconic Grand Pier.
The team’s achievement has been sponsored by a range of national and local businesses along with friends, family and colleagues in their bid to raise at least £40,000 to support six charities as County Contractors celebrates its 40th successful year in business under the motto ’40 for 40!’.
Kevin Lee said: “The ride was tough going but great fun, and we all just kept peddling in the knowledge that our efforts were raising much needed funds for great causes.”
Ray Heathman, Chairman of County Contractors commented in a celebration event held at the Pier after the team crossed the line: “Once again, my thanks to Kevin, Pete, Roger, Jamie and Paul for your commitment to the cause, and completing the enduring 260-mile cycle ride. Without your effort this would not have been possible.”
One of the nominated charities for the Coast-2-Coast challenge is the Weston General Hospital Scanner Appeal. James Rimmer, Chief Executive at Weston Area NHS Trust, said: "We are absolutely delighted to have benefited from the Coast to Coast Bike Ride."
“I’d like to offer a huge thank you to everyone at County Contractors for this generous donation and a huge well done to everyone involved in this fantastic challenge. Thank you for helping us move closer to our goal.”
The five other nominated charities are Cancer Research UK, Alzheimer’s Research UK, Guide Dogs, West of England Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre, and Weston Hospicecare.

Sidcot parents, Pete Mercer (SCPTA Chair and father of Zoe Mercer) and Kevin Lee (parent of Tom and Sophie Lee) are participating with three work colleagues in a 260-mile charity cycle ride from Botany Bay, Kent back to the Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare. The challenge is entitled Coast to Coast and will take three days this weekend, 23 to 25 September.
This is to mark our company County Contractors' 40th anniversary milestone. Pete said: "This provides us with an opportunity to give something back to the community. We’ve always actively helped charitable causes and engaged with our local community to provide support for those who are disadvantaged in some way and we wanted to extend that support to give our largest contribution yet to six worthy charities that have each touched, and benefitted, the lives of our staff or their loved ones."
The CC cyclists have set themselves a target to raise £40,000 – representing each of their company's 40 years in business – 40 for 40! The six nominated charities for the Coast-2-Coast challenge are Cancer Research UK, Alzheimer’s Research UK, Guide Dogs, Weston General Hospital Scanner Appeal, Weston Hospicecare and West of England Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre.
After purchasing a bicycle just 14 weeks ago, training has been gruelling and a steep learning curve for the gents, but great fun. Kevin said: "I’m now looking forward to getting onto the saddle in the company of four of my colleagues and peddling hard to raise these much needed funds for great causes."
