Sidcot Orienteering Event
We are delighted to invite students, parents and staff to participate in the forthcoming Sidcot and Winscombe Orienteering event on the evening of Wednesday 13th June. This is one of a number of Wednesday evening events in the Bristol Orienteering Club calendar and as hosts we would be very pleased to see participation from the Sidcot community. We have two excellent student orienteers, Ruby and Guy Owen, and some experienced teacher orienteers too. Graham Hartley has planned the courses and Matthew Owen, Guy and Ruby’s father, is the organiser.
Orienteering is an exciting sport requiring some basic navigation and map reading. It is very accessible and the shortest course (see below) is designed for less experienced participants. The only equipment needed would be a compass. You will be given a map and you can hire a “dibber” on the day (a dibber is a small device like a memory stick which records your start, finish and arrival at each of the flags).
The base for the event is Tom’s Field, the bonfire night location, where there will be registration, with the start and finish nearby. For those who have never been orienteering before the Orange course would be suitable – it is based entirely in the school grounds, is roughly 3km long, and would be recognisable for those who have previously done the boundary walk. For the more ambitious (and over 16) there are 2 courses, Green (6km) and Blue (9km), around the village which are more demanding of navigation skills.
Entries can be made on the day from 5.30pm, with the start times from 6.00pm until approximately 7.30pm. Further information is available on the Bristol Orienteering website.
