Sports Reports – week ending Friday 11 November
North Somerset Cross-Country Championships, Wednesday 9 November
We had a super afternoon at these Championships – our students did us proud!
All ran with determination and tenacity and used the experience gained in our preparation runs around reservoir and fields to good effect. There was a real sense of ‘team’ about our Sidcot runners.
A fantastic set of results indeed!
Our Minor boys (Third Form) finished in 5th position overall with best placed finisher James Wroath who finished in 4th , with Guy Owen not far behind in 7th place. Our Intermediate boys finished 6th, with the first four team runners in the top 30 – James King our best at 20th , Matt Fisher 23rd and Laurence Badman, 25th. Junior boys finished a fabulous 3rd – with the top four runners in the top 20! Oliver Chatting was 3rd, Tom Loader 4th, Jim Mitchell 11th and Adam Lyall 17th. Brilliant!
Our girls were also marvellously successful. Minor girls finished in 4th place. Isabella Hoddell was 7th, Sophie Lee 13th and Lily Adam, 17th. Intermediate girls finished 2nd with Imogen Moroney coming in 2nd, Indeigh Winterson, 6th, Clara Mann, 16th and Yasmin Sluijmers 25th, narrowly followed by Molly Carter, 26th .
Junior girls were superb – they were top team! Freya King came in a close 2nd, Ruby Owen 3rd and Sarah Carr 8th. Annabel Wroath pushed hard and gained 26th place. A great achievement indeed.
So – all rather brilliant – especially when one remembers the 12 big schools in our District and the fact that each school could enter 6 runners in each race!
We have yet to have the overall school results confirmed – but it looks extremely likely that boys will be 3rd overall and the girls will be champions!
We are very hopeful that a number of our students will be selected to represent North Somerset at the Avon Championships in January.
A very well done to all who took part. It was a pleasure to be out with such a super group of motived and eager students.

Girls' fixtures
U12 Netball v Worle School, Tuesday 8 November: Sidcot 1 – 8 Worle
Although Worle inflicted a similar victory to the one that Backwell achieved against Sidcot last week, this was a much more impressive and assured performance from the girls. They not only showed greater tenacity in their work rate, but their passing was slick, accurate and at times free flowing through the court. With this improved consistency came the confidence to compete eagerly for the ball, something they had previously struggled with.
There was also a real sense of unity amongst these girls, all of whom showed good movement to help retain possession, despite the constant pressure from a taller and more agile opposition. Issie Hoddell and Victoria Lawrence both had very solid games, demonstrating good awareness and anticipation in their play to restrict the constant flow of quality ball from the Worle attacking quartet. Lilia Fairley had to work extremely hard in the attacking circle, as did Sophie Lee, Jess Brown and Evie Ward in the centre third, to create sufficient space where they could receive good ball, but they all persevered enthusiastically to achieve success.
Despite the difference in goals scored, this was a great team performance from all the girls concerned and is an encouraging sign of their development in their netball ability and knowledge.

U13 Netball v Worle Tuesday 8 November: Sidcot 0 – 10 Worle
This proved to be a tough fixture for the Sidcot girls. They found it hard to keep pace with Worle who showed fast and dynamic pace. They often intercepted the ball but then lost possession through careless passing when they were trying to play at the same pace. Worle kept up a good rhythm in the first half and scored most of the total goals in this period.
In the second half with a few substitutions the girls responded better to the half time advice and tried to slow the play down when they were in possession of the ball. This was immediately more successful and it was Worle who were making careless errors. The girls worked hard right to the end and gave the shooters more opportunities to claw back the score line. Unfortunately although the play was much more in Sidcot's favour they could not score.
Hopefully the girls will use this experience to help develop their own play further.

U16 Girls North Somerset Hockey Tournament at Broadoak School, Thursday 10 November
This was a great afternoon of hockey from the girls – they were highly competitive and played their best hockey of the term so far.
There were three games for them. The first, against Broadoak, proved an exciting, end to end game with much determination and spirit on show – despite there being no goals scored! Chances were created by both teams. Sidcot certainly had the better of the first half, while Broadoak fought their way back into the game and forced the Sidcot defence to work really hard to repel their efforts at scoring.
Final score: 0 – 0
The second game against St Katherine was equally well contested. St Katherines were feisty and ran down every ball. Sidcot worked hard and kept their heads under pressure and came off the better after Indeigh Winterson slotted home. St Kaths could not reply – so a good and well deserved win for our girls.
In the final game against Nailsea, there was an onslaught of attack which the Sidcot defence did their utmost to repel. Frida Cardale was tireless in her efforts to steal the ball and distribute forward and all three backs worked hard to mark and stop Nailsea scoring. There was a fabulous save from Millie Ashdown – head height left and saved with the glove – but Nailsea were not to be denied.
Final score: 2 – 0 to Nailsea
We left before the end of the final game of the tournament – there was McDonalds to be had and those in the cast of the play needed to get back. The final placings are not yet confirmed as the last game had not concluded but it looks entirely possible that we could finish 2nd of the four teams
This was a highly enjoyable afternoon – the girls should feel well satisfied with this good team performance.

Boys' Fixtures
U12/13 Rugby v Brymore Academy, Saturday 5 November: Sidcot 5 – 25 Brymore
On an excellent day for rugby Sidcot’s Under 12s welcomed a very strong Brymore Academy team. Despite Sidcot’s home advantage, it was Brymore who got off to the better start in what proved to be a bruising encounter. Their early pressure soon told with their first try of the day after a sustained period deep in the Sidcot half. Brymore’s early momentum continued and it was only because of some heroic defending from Sidcot that prevented Brymore from adding to their score.
As the half progressed however Sidcot managed to pull themselves back into the game and build some pressure of their own. An excellent break from the elusive Theo Parker-Mills almost resulted in Sidcot pulling the scores level, however a last ditched tackle stopped him just short of the line. This close call, galvanised Brymore who came storming back with 2 quick tries to end the half with a comfortable lead.
In the 2nd half the match continued in much the same fashion as the 1st, with both teams having periods of dominance. With defences on top however, the game entered the last quarter with the scores as they were at halftime. Sidcot’s efforts were finally rewarded with Owen Wright finally managing to break through the Brymore defence.
Although Sidcot continued to battle hard, it was Brymore who ended the match on top. With the effort of the Sidcot boys starting to take its toll and the advantage of fresh legs from the bench, Brymore were able to exploit the gaps in the Sidcot defence running in 2 late tries.
Although the result left the Sidcot boys disappointed, there were still a lot of positives to take from another hard fought match. For such a young team progress made is outstanding. Player of the match Marc Barrabess Zapata is also proving what an influential player he can be in both attack and defence. Whilst the result was not what they wanted, the boys should be pleased with the progress they are making.
