The Benefits of Studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is a rigorous pre-university course designed to prepare students for higher education and life beyond school. Alongside A Levels and BTEC, the IB is one of the most popular courses for college-age students to undertake in the UK. However, unlike the alternative options, the IB can offer a range of benefits particularly suited to the international student.
What is the IB?
The IB Diploma Programme is a comprehensive and challenging two-year course for students aged 16-19 that focuses on developing students' intellectual, personal, and social skills. Students study six subjects: three at higher level and three at standard level, with the organisation of subject choices ensuring that they maintain a breadth of study across English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Languages and Arts.
Alongside their subjects, IB students study Theory of Knowledge (TOK), where they engage in active discussions on how knowledge is produced and acquired, and Creativity Action Service (CAS), where they participate in creative, physical and service activities in the local community.
The Points System
Each subject examined is graded on a scale of 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest), where 4 is the minimum to pass each subject. The maximum for all six subjects is 42 points. There are up to 3 extra points for both the TOK essay and exhibition, and the extended essay making a total of 45 points. To obtain a Diploma, students will normally have to achieve a score of 24 points and have successfully completed all components of the programme.
Who is the IB for?
Any student can study the IB, but we highly recommend this programme for international students, students wishing to study abroad, students who would like to keep their university and career options open, and students who wish to be academically challenged. These are the students who the IB programme is particularly designed for, and who will gain the most benefit from the course.
Benefits of Studying the IB
There are numerous benefits to studying the IB including:
- Global Perspective: The IB is designed to foster international mindedness and cultural understanding. Students learn about different cultures, perspectives, and historical events, preparing them to be global citizens in an increasingly interconnected world.
- Holistic Education: The IB goes beyond academic subjects. It emphasizes the development of the whole person through its core components: the Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).

Additionally, the breadth of subjects taken means students can keep their university options open.

The programme encourages students to develop essential life skills such as independence, resilience, and adaptability. Students learn to manage their time effectively, work collaboratively, and think critically. These skills will benefit them not only in their academic pursuits but also in their personal and professional life.
