This weekend, three Sidcot triathletes competed at the British Triathlon's Grand Final in the scorching heat! Killy F (Year 7) qualified for the Inter Regional Championships (IRCs) which were held alongside the Youth, Junior and Senior Super Series Championships (England, Scotland and Wales). Killy's qualification was all the more impressive as he is at the younger end of his 11/12yr age group (Tri Star 2).
Thea F (Year 9) was a reserve for Tri Star 3, so didn't compete in the main competition but stepped in to make up a relay team. Thea was also a brilliant supporter all weekend despite long days in the heat!
Killy had a solid race; on Saturday he raced heats and finals as an aquathlon (swim/run) then did a transition challenge, and on Sunday a triathlon relay just like at the Olympics! The South West IRC team's combined points won them a Silver medal (this was out of 12 regions).
Tali's age group raced with the Junior & Senior women over the Sprint distance, 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run. Tali was one of the youngest competitors in this race and out of the 57 starters, she was 21st overall and 3rd place in her age group. Tali's age group results for the Series, which has been running since April, were; 4th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st, & 3rd, securing her a 3rd place overall in the Series.
Sidcot's very own Martin Rogers, Sports Centre Manager, is responsible for coaching these three children since they were 5 or 6 years old, and has produced several athletes up to National Standard, including his own son who managed a very impressive 7th place in the Senior race. Martin is an international triathlete himself and runs regular triathlete events for children aged 7 to 12, called Splash & Dash. Splash & Dash is a fantastic introduction to the world of Triathlon with an emphasis on fun! At Sidcot, we are fortunate to have the perfect setting for budding triathletes with a beautiful 25 metre indoor pool and 150 acres of surrounding countryside. Find out more about our Splash & Dash events, including when the next event will be held and how to secure your place, here.
