Extended Project Qualification success for Sidcot School
Sixth Form students at Sidcot School scooped some impressive results in this year’s Extended Project Qualification. The EPQ offers children the opportunity to produce a project on a topic of their choice and provides the equivalent of half an A Level.
Sidcot students achieved an overall pass rate of 100% with an impressive 54% of students achieving an A* or A grade.
Sidcot prides itself on an educational philosophy that fuels a passion for learning in its students, along with building self-belief and personal confidence. The EPQ fits in well with this philosophy as it gives students the opportunity to explore in detail a topic they are interested in.
EPQ Coordinator Geoff Andrews commented on this year’s outcome and said: “We are very proud of the EPQ students for their achievements both in terms of their results, but equally importantly, how they approached their projects.”
There were a number of standout results including:
Charlotte Boddy achieved an A* for her project on ‘The Rise of Right Wing Populist Politics’ and plans to go to the University of Manchester or Sussex to read Psychology.
Finlay Bosworth from Weston-super-Mare received an A grade for his project on 'A screen play on Alexander II, Tsar of Russia'. Finlay will be attending Cardiff University to read Philosphy and History and aims to start a career surrounding business, entrepeneurship or politics.
Oliver Maxwell from Winscombe, was delighted with his A* for his project on ‘World War II D-Day’. Oliver is off to either the University of Kent or Aberystwyth to study Military History and hopes to start a career in the MoD.
Zoe Mercer from Winscombe received an A* for her project: 'Create a statement piece that represents an environmental issue', which resulted in constructing a big octopus made from recyclable materials! Zoe hopes to attend Brunel or Goldsmiths University to read Design and will aim to persue a career in product design. Zoe said: "A Sidcot education is diverse and tailored to the individual and more on a personal level. The EPQ prepares you for university and it's a good opportunity to do something on your own, especially studying something you enjoy."
Sharukka Rajkumar from St George, Bristol, achieved an A* for her project on ‘NHS Medical Law’. Sharukka is heading to the University of Southampton to read Law and plans to pursue a career as a barrister. Sharukka said, “The EPQ has taught me invaluable independent research skills.”
Christian Hughes, Deputy Head (Academic), concluded: “These are an impressive set of results which outline the value of Sidcot’s approach. All our EPQ students should be congratulated on their efforts.”
