News from the Religion, Ethics and Philosophy Department
Last week, I took my Lower Fifth GCSE Philosophy and Ethics group to a Science and Faith conference in the inspirational setting of Bristol Cathedral. Entitled 'God and the Big Bang', the day explored issues such as creation, evolution and natural disasters from both the scientific and faith viewpoints. As you might expect, out students acquitted themselves very well, especially as they were the youngest group amongst Upper Fifth GCSE and A Level students from other school. Our students volunteered in demonstration activities, asked insightful questions in the Q&A session and even managed to get their paper aeroplane the furthest on one occasion! I am grateful to Mark Van de Poll who accompanied us on the trip.
Overall it was a stimulating event which presented a strong case for the existence of both a Big Bang and a Divine Creator.
If you've never discussed these type of issues over the kitchen table, may I recommend it? There's a host of evidence that philosophy actually increases brain capacity. And the views of young people about such issues can be astonishing!
