The rain stopped and sun shone for the first run out for our Third Form team at the North Somerset Development Rugby Festival.
These events are brilliant and aim to help develop players and bond teams who have a variety of ability in rugby. Our team were well matched with a few club players and a larger number who have come to contact rugby for the first time. Played at the Weston RFC ground the lads were spoilt with wonderful facilities and weather to boot.
Joining us were Priory, Churchill, Hans Price and Worle Schools, meaning that we had four games of 16 minutes. The purpose of the day was to develop the skills required to play full age grade rugby by the end of the season. This meant that it was tackle and pass play rather than slowing the game down with rucking, mauling and set piece. Basically, all of the players could get stuck in playing fast running rugby!
Our first game was great and very close just losing in the last seconds to Hans Price. We bounced back to beat Priory and then Worle, only to finish second place to Churchill. There was some really encouraging and leading play from the veterans, Jonny Lee, George Christacos, Louis Hudson, Alex Bryant and Finn Painter, but I was also proud to see James Robertson-Jones, Tymon Kaczorowski and Dylan Fotios as debut players all running hard, tackling harder and scoring tries!
