A record breaking day for Sidcot DofE
Sunday 9 October was a record breaking day for Sidcot DofE with 72 pupils out in the hills navigating in groups independently of staff, enjoying the countryside and the company of their friends.
Thirty three of the students were in Wales completing the third day of Silver expeditions, they had been lucky with the weather and the main hazard was the early approach of evening darkness which caught one group out and they arrived at the campsite in the car of a local farmer.
The remaining thirty nine were Lower Fifth pupils nearer home in the Mendips taking their first few steps of DofE on the first training day for the Bronze award.
The 2016 expedition season has now finished and it has been a busy and successful year with two Bronze, four Silver and a Gold final expedition completed with visits to the Quantocks, Exmoor, the Brecon Beacons and Tanzania.
Over the Winter we will enrol new students and organise training in the local hills in readiness for 2017.
Thanks to all the staff who make DofE at Sidcot possible – Graham Hartley, Sue Skyrme, Paul Gregory, Mary Dowds and Sarah Jones. We are also supported by retired teachers Lynda Redding and Tim Tur who assess our student to ensure that they are of the required standard in navigation and campcraft.
