This Summer James Eyermann went behind the scenes at Number 10 Downing Street to see what a career in politics might involve. Spending time in the communications department, James was able to get a feel for all of the different sections and part of his placement was with the team who answer letters from the public. For James, the whole experience was magical. He said: “The best bit was the tour and having the chance to soak up the atmosphere – I was allowed in some state rooms and went up the famous staircase with all of the photos of past Prime Ministers. It was surreal!”
Getting to sit in Margaret Thatcher’s chair was also a highlight for the Year 12 student whose interest in politics was ignited by a documentary about the ‘iron lady’. James did not have the chance to meet our PM this time but, we wondered, should Mr Cameron be worried about his job? “Well” said James, “I have aspirations to be Prime Minister – I actually do” but he added with a cheeky grin, “I think David Cameron will be long gone by the time I’m ready!”
James’ next adventure in politics will be a placement with local MP John Penrose.
