Sidcot Student Picked to Represent Weston-super-Mare Swimming Club
Following a five-month lay-off, with a broken patella (kneecap), Sidcot Third Form students and Swimming Scholar Owain Edwards returned to swimming in September.
He quickly established himself as the fastest boy in his age group, leading to him being picked to represent Weston-super-Mare Swimming Club (WSMSC) in the National Arena League Competition. Owain raced in his first events at the end of last November in Bristol and contributed to WSMSC, winning a place in their league's 'B' Final. The Final was held on 2nd December and Owain again swam in the relay and Freestyle events to help WSMSC win the Final against major opposition, including Bournemouth SC.
Owain also took part in The Somerset ASA County Development Championships at the end of November and took Gold in the 50m Freestyle, along with 6 other personal best times in other events. More recently (6th/7th January), Owain took part in the United Bristol Swimming Clubs National Qualifier Gala at Hengrove where he competed in six events. Here he achieved six personal best times and three Golds in 50m & 100 m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke, with Silver in the 100m Backstroke and Bronze in 50m Breaststroke. He now has a Regional Consideration time and is just 0.4 secs off a full qualifying time for the Regions 50m Freestyle event.
Owain is now training hard and looking forward to competing in eight events at the Somerset County Championships which start at the end of January and run over four weekends at Millfield School.
Well done Owain!
