This has been a very busy and active term and despite some fairly grim weather since half term there has been a great deal happening for both girls and boys.

North Somerset Tournament: 4th (of 11)
These girls have played well in their various matches and have achieved some pleasing results. They have gained in strength, experience and skill and are beginning to develop much better awareness of space and movement. This was certainly evident in their tournament last week. On what proved to be an extremely cold afternoon they showed great resilience, working hard in fairly horrible conditions to win some tough games. Their tenacity paid off and they finished a very creditable 4th.

Lower Fourth Netball – U13

B team Played 6, Won 3, Drawn 1, Lost 2, Cancelled 3.
The Lower Fourth girls took part in two North Somerset tournaments – the U14 one (as our Upper Fourth were out of school on the day of their tournament and their own U13 one).
This squad of players has made good steady progress throughout the season in all areas of their game, but especially so in terms of the speed and awareness of their movement on court. Operating with a large squad of girls has enabled us to field two teams and has also given opportunity for rotation of players around various positions, resulting in a successful combination which proved extremely valuable in their more recent games and tournaments. They are really beginning to develop better fluency and consistency in their play.
They played really well in their year group tournament, beating some of the stronger teams in our District and progressing through to the semi-final stages where they narrowly lost to Worle School. They were then just pipped to 4th place by Churchill who went a goal ahead in the dying seconds of the game.

Upper Fourth Netball – U14

The U4 girls were not able to play in the area tournament – rather a shame – as they had also had a number of their matches cancelled.
Always competitive, in a friendly and good spirited way, this team have enjoyed some very close matches this season against some strong and dynamic opposition. As their confidence has grown, they have developed more maturity in their play, utilising the ball far more effectively and intelligently. With improved consistency and at times a little more control and composure, they now have the players and awareness tactically to begin to challenge some of the tougher teams within their fixture cohort.

North Somerset Tournament – Semi-final.
This team have travelled a real journey this season. They played some ferociously tough matches at the start and suffered narrow defeats but their standard and results have improved steadily throughout the term. The highlight, certainly, were their performances at the North Somerset tournament, where they played, by far, the best hockey that I have seen from them.
We had an excellent afternoon at this tournament – they progressed through from the group stages to the semi-final where, in a very tight encounter with Churchill, they were deemed to have come second on the ‘short corner’ ruling and therefore although they did not concede a goal they did not go through to the final. It felt very tough!

U15 VII and 1st VII Netball

Both these teams have played a handful of fixtures, during what is primarily their hockey season, against new and in some cases, quite testing opposition. Using the Tuesday night training as the basis for their preparation, both teams have had mixed success in terms of victories, but the standard of their play has been particularly impressive.
Always showing good commitment, the girls who participated are playing with much greater composure and determination, as well as improved style and speed. With their netball season now in front of them, we look forward in anticipation to even closer encounters on the netball court.
Weston & District Netball (Senior squad)
Played: 5, Won:4, Drawn:0, Lost:1. (League games).
The introduction of at least five new players into the senior squad, filling the empty shoes of others now settled into university life, has. certainly strengthened the girls' performance on court. They are showing great promise, as the team currently sits top of league approaching the half way point of the season. All players are demonstrating improved confidence and tenacity in their play, gelling well with the more experienced team members, who continue to lead by example.
With the regular attendance of sixteen plus girls at training on Tuesday evenings, the future of this team looks bright and hopefully those who continue to knock on the door, will ultimately be rewarded with a coveted place in this squad.

Hockey and netball House shields are awarded at the end of the spring term, as are the individual cups for these sports.
Cross Country
This has been our busy cross country term. All the girls have run a number of times and our House cross country competition traditionally involves a run around Axbridge reservoir for Third Form to Upper Fifth. It was super to see a spread of year groups represented in the top ten runners.

House results were also recorded. In Upper Fourth, North won and in Third Form, South, but otherwise East dominated the results in each year group.

From the various races, teams were selected to take part in the North Somerset Cross Country Championships held at Hutton Moor in Weston in November.
The students acquitted themselves very well on a dry afternoon. All the students ran well over the lengthy courses putting in some great efforts and being rewarded with some good results.

Overall Sidcot won the girls event. Absolutely fabulous and, we believe a first ever!
Several of these students; Jasmine Moroney, Imogen Moroney, Clara Mann, Indeigh Winterson, Freya King, and Amber Spillane, and Matthew Fisher and have been selected for the next round of Cross Country races where they will represent North Somerset at the Avon championships in January with a chance of representing Avon at a later date if they perform well.

Swimming
Both boys and girls have worked hard in the pool to improve technique, speed and endurance. They have been timed at 25m distances and it is pleasing to report that a number have improved upon previous times.
A number of students have achieved gold standard times in each of the 4 strokes including; Lily Arnold (Third Form) Freya King, Amber Spillane, Sarah Carr (Lower Fourth) and Sofia Peon (Lower Fifth).
Many students were involved in a competitive but friendly Gala v Clifton High school in December. They all swam well which was reflected in the close result of a draw at the end of the evening.
British Pentathlon Biathlon Series
A number of students from Year 5 to the 6th Form competed at several regional qualifying events during the Autumn. Eight of these pupils gained national rankings - good enough for them to qualify for both the National Biathlon Championship and the Schools Championships.

Four of these students were able to go to Solihill on 29 November to compete in the National Championships. They all showed true grit and determination in awful weather conditions to achieve some fantastic results.

On the back of these brilliant performances Amber Spillane, Sarah Carr and Freya King have all been selected for the English Talent Programme training for Modern Pentathlon.
North Somerset Indoor Athletic Championships
The year 7 and 8 Championships for the South of the district were held on Thursday 11th December at Priory school. It was a frantic evening of very competitive athletics. All our students participated strongly with skill and determination. The U12 and U13 Boys both came 3rd in their events, while the U12 Girls came second and the U13 Girls won. This was a very impressive achievement for our pupils.
Boys
Season 2015 was very enjoyable and threw up some excellent highlights. Walking around school at break and lunch to see children playing nothing but touch rugby highlights the enthusiasm and passion the children have for the game. The weather was a constant source of frustration - certainly for the latter half of the season. This has resulted in some matches being lost to mother-nature and others being played on extremely muddy pitches in dank and cold conditions.
Looking back on the season there were so many positives starting with the enthusiasm and ability of the Third Form. The future is very exciting with the lovely brand of rugby they play. The improvement and enthusiasm of the Year 10 team is also very encouraging. Coached by Andy Gunningham these boys are going from strength to strength. Year 11 who have been coached superbly well by Ben Burkes, with assistance from captain John Alvis, have produced some wonderful displays. Also we were able to field a B team in year 11 which is really encouraging for next season’s first team.
Under 12 XII
The under 12’s had a wonderful season captained by Henry Hawkins who led by example with Storm Biles encouraging and organising the less experienced players. They have a mix of strong forwards such as Ollie Davies, Eddy Binks and Owen Wright who were able to create a lovely platform for likes of Joe Hart, Ben Northcott and Zac Townson who were a pleasure to watch with their jinky runs. We look forward to watching them develop into a strong team as they move up through the school.

Under 13 XIII
The under 13’s faced some very stiff opposition, facing the likes of Brymore and St. Kaths who fielded very robust teams. The team were led by example through William Lloyd who had a tackle count to die for. He was well supported by the likes of Eddy Gunningham, Henry Binks, Joss Grove, and Finn Finch who were all strong in defence. With Louis Browne at scrum half, Rufus Long’s creativity at 10, the dynamic Toby Pratt at 12, and with the whole year group being ultra-enthusiastic, the under 13’s have the foundations of an excellent team.

Under 14 XV
Individually the under 14’s have made the most progress, developing a more assertive contact based environment. Players like Bertie Talby, Lawence Badman, Lewie Parker-Mills and William Lewin have made huge strides in their tackling skills. With a strong spine of players such as Billy Lindsay, Tom Hawkins, Jamie Miles and Matthew Fisher if the rest of the squad keep making excellent progress the under 14’s will progress nicely into year 10 and 11.

Under 15 XV
The under 15s with the editions of Adam and Luke Garner-Green, Frank Morris and new coach Andy Gunningham were a truly rejuvenated team. They are a very enthusiastic bunch of players, who are totally obsessed with the game. Their season highlight was an excellent win over a very strong Leighton Park School playing a lovely brand of expansive rugby where both forwards and backs showing a high level of skill in the loose, as encouraged by Mr. Gunningham.

Under 16XV
The rugby mad under 16s were able to field two squads, such is the enthusiasm within the year group. Fielding a B team allowed players such as Ernie Tang, Bruce Xie, Ray Bai and Jargor Jasjko, all new to the sport, to develop their skills – and all of the above made A team appearances. Captain and coach John Alvis led his side superbly turning out high quality performances such as the win at Queen Elizabeth Hospital school and the outstanding match against Clifton High school where they lost narrowly. We are excited to watch the lads develop into a very strong 1st XV.

1st XV
The highlight of the first XV season was the annual Winscombe match, where the first XV produced the performance of the season to run Winscombe close, even taking the lead mid-way through the second half. Every man tackled their hearts out and with man of the match Will Macarthur pulling the string and the ever dangerous Cameron Smith, Sidcot always looked dangerous, in fact it was while camped in their 22 that Winscombe scored the breakaway try to break Sidcot hearts and end a wonderful match.
