Sports Reports Week Ending 17 June
Avon Athletics Championships at Yate stadium, Saturday 11 June
Our students performed well at this event and should feel proud to have represented District. We were certainly very proud to support them.
Freya King and Sarah Carr both achieved good times: Freya a personal best in the 1500m race and, Sarah, a good effort in the 200m. Both ran well against strong fields of runners. They still have a year to compete in this age category and we look forward to further success next year.
Adam Garner-Greene competed in intermediate javelin, finished in second place and threw reasonably well – over 30m – although not to his best of near 40m!

Girls' U12 Rounders v Worle School, Thursday 16 June: Sidcot 10 – 9.5 Worle
This was a fast paced and competitive fixture. The girls won the toss so fielded first. They were extremely well disciplined and worked very well together. They made very few errors and restricted Worle to only scoring a few half rounders. Camille made an excellent catch at first, while Sofia achieved a similar result at backstop. Lily bowled consistently keeping the hitting opportunities to a minimum. Erin was fast to stop balls flying out in the 3rd are and quickly passed them to Molly on second base. Many times this was followed up with a secondary pass on to 3 rd to Skye or Fourth to Ana which resulted in a few of Worle's batters being caught out on the post. Izzy and Lottie did not see the ball too often but fielded sensibly on the occasions it came their way. When the girls batted they began by hitting well and managed to start accumulating half rounders on a regular basis at 2 nd post. Molly, Izzy,Lily,Sofia and Erin all scored half rounders while Molly also managed a whole one. The score after the first innings was therefore 3 rounders in Sidcot's favour.
Worle then played a different team in the second innings and they began batting well. SIdcot then made a few uncharacteristic mistakes allowing Worle to accumulate several half rounders and a few whole ones. Sidcot girls then settled and continued to be sharp with their stumping of posts and slowly whittled the Worle team down to only a few batters. They managed to get Worle out before the end of the 36 ball innings.Sidcot now knew they only had to score 4 rounders to win. Worle had not given up and were absolutely determined not to allow the girls to score. It was more than half way through the innings when Sidcot first scored.
Then there were several half rounders snuck in from Sofia and Ana while Molly managed to score a whole rounder.
It was very tense right to the last ball but the Sidcot girls managed to win by the narrow margin of half a rounder.

U13 Rounders v Worle School, Thursday 16 June: Sidcot 8 – 9.5 Worle
This was another competitively fought affair, played in good and cheerful spirit.
Worle were put into bat first. Some good fielding ensured that their scoring was limited and a general sharpness found several players out. At the end of the batting period Worle had achieved a score of 5 rounders for Sidcot to chase.
Worle fielded well – there were some good throwers who were adept at getting ball to post player quickly and this certainly limited the Sidcot scoring. Chances had to be taken and first 2 whole rounders and then some halvess were scored. 3.5 was the final score for 1st innings.
Sidcot started their second fielding stint with good concentration and a number of Worle players were quickly either stumped or caught. Still some scoring was successfully achieved – there were a couple of ferocious batters. The score was raised to a challenging 9.5.
Sidcot came in for to bat with a competitive determination, eager to chase down the opposition score. They immediately began to score both halves and wholes with more decisive, swift running. All was very close and the last few balls of the innings were really quite tense. Was it enough? Not quite, but a great effort indeed.
Great efforts and enthusiasm displayed by all.

U14 Rounders v Worle School, Thursday 16 June: Sidcot 8.5 – 8 Worle
Another good performance from this keen group of girls who never fail to arrive with extras’ eager to play. Fabulous.
The girls started in bat and found themselves against a slick and shark fielding side and therefore both ½ and whole rounders were hard to come by. Several were achieved, however, and possibly one of the best by a very speedy Ellie Cooke who took her chance well and sprinted round to score a whole rounder. We gave Worle 4.5 to chase.
Good fielding and team play in terms of ‘backing up’ and communicating clearly, paid dividends, as did some accurate and fast bowling by Gracie Fletcher. Worle were held to 3.5 – super work.
In the second innings, Sidcot again batted determinedly putting pressure on the Worle fielders to make mistakes. The Sidcot score rose to
Worle came in to bat again and the game was really tight, with all to play for. Again, Sidcot fielded with conviction and vision – making good decisions and getting a number of players out.
And what a close finish it was – just the ½ rounder in it.
As is par for the course, the girls played in cheerful good spirit and with super sportsmanship – Gracie Fletcher should get special mention – as bowler, she called her own ‘no ball’ on more than one occasion. I love that!

Girls’ U15 Rounders v Worle School, Thursday 16 June: Sidcot 4 – 6.5 Worle
The U15 team continued to show good improvement in a performance that was bathed in glorious sunshine and played in great spirit, despite a dreadful weather forecast. Put into bat, Sidcot made Worle work hard for their three rounders during their first innings, showing sharp fielding off the floor and quick decision making in and around second post. Immy Moroney, Hema Shah and Sofia Peon combined well to stop the Worle batsmen from scoring freely at second post and with Lizzy Thompson able to utilise her accurate, fast throw from the back stop postion, Worle’s scoring opportunities were seriously halted.
In past games Sidcot struggled to hit the ball beyond the diamond, but on this occasion with improved contact with the bat the girls grew in confidence to find good space out in the field.
Millie Ashdown, Sofia Peon and Hema Shah all hit the ball with strength, speed and accuracy to keep Sidcot in touch at the change.
The second innings was very much a mirror of the first, but a great running catch from Sofia Peon was the highlight of a very close game. This was Sidcot’s closest match this season and they were very unlucky to lose out by just two and a half rounders. All the girls involved clearly enjoyed the experience against friendly and team spirited opposition.

Boys’ U12 & U13 Cricket v Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital School, Monday 13 June: Sidcot 74 for 3 / QEH 75 for 2
Having narrowly missed out in their last game Sidcot were keen to make amends at QEH. Having been put into bat by the home side, openers Henry Hawkins and Eddie Binks got Sidcot off to a fantastic start. With Binks again proving solid in defence, Hawkins was able to swing the willow and soon had the helpless QEH bowlers watching on in frustration has he dispatched the ball to all parts of the park.
With both openers having being retired, it was the turn of Captain Fantastic, Jacob Perry, to take the game to QEH. With tone of the innings already set, Perry was soon in on the act displaying his quality with an array of outstanding shots. With Sidcot looking to push on at pace, QEH fought back and managed to grab a couple of wickets. However, a late flourish from the superb Rufus Long ensured finished on an impressive 75 for 2 off of their 15 overs.
Following their strong finish Sidcot took to the field in confident mood. They soon found themselves on the back foot however as QEH got off to a flying start. Despite some outstanding fielding, including one full length diving stop from the excellent Beau Noya, QEH racked up the runs and soon had victory in their sights. Despite the brilliant bowling of Tom Robins and Eddie Binks slowing the flow of runs, and Man of the Match Rufus Long taking 2 wickets, QEH manged to crawl over the line to take the win in this enthralling encounter.

Boys' U15 Cricket v Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital School, Tuesday 14 June: Sidcot 137 for 8 / QEH 136 all out
After suffering a heavy defeat in their first encounter, Sidcot decided to bowl first and took to the field with a spring in their step. This positivity was backed up with aggressive, tight opening bowling from Frank Morris and Joe Jonas. It then continued with an impressive first change attack of Luke and Adam Garner-Greene. They were then supported brilliantly by Jago Biles, Ed Willis and Thomas Duvall all bowling a lovely line and length.
Chasing 137, Sidcot opened the batting in the same manner with Oscar Browne hitting a boundary off the first ball. He went on to score a quick-fire 42. Adam Garner-Greene then came in and continued to keep the run rate high. Both men were well backed up by Luke Garner-Greene who scored a very solid unbeaten 50.

Boys U15 Tennis v Clifton College, Thursday 16 June: Sidcot 3 – 1 CC
In near perfect conditions, Clifton College visited Sidcot for a lovely game of tennis, which was played in wonderful spirit with great skill.
Ignacio de la Torre and Rufus Long both produced some excellent group strokes to comfortably win two sets to nil. Matthew Fisher and Sam Baldwin, Spencer Cole and Will Ford also won by the same score line.
The closest game of the day was a tightly fought match between Laurence Badman and partner, Matt Boddy, both teams refused to take a backward step but unfortunately the Sidcot pair eventually finished runners up losing 7-5, 7-5.
