Whilton Mill Kart Club Championships
Lower Fifth student and motor enthusiast Riley Phillips was awarded a trophy at Whilton Mill Kart Club in Northampton, one of the biggest tracks and clubs in the UK. This particular championship runs over 11 rounds – one round being comprising three heats and a final – with your best nine rounds to count to the championship.
Due to Riley's size he has had to move up a class to the more powerful and faster Junior Rotax Max – a class for 13 to 17 olds. Upon entering this class last year, Riley was still only 13 so racing against mostly 16 year olds is tough going! However, he was not phased and his pace was impressive all year round – he won five finals and was never off the podium all year. This meant Riley won the championship two rounds early, finishing his last round in style winning all three heats and the final. It also means he has won back to back championships at Whilton Mill in two different classes, which is very rare. It's also his third championship on the trot as he took the Llandow championship in 2014.
The awards dinner was in January 2017 and was hosted by F1 Commentator Louise Goodman (pictured below with Riley). The championship trophies were specially made by HAAS F1 team from an actual F1 wheel nut (one wheel nut costs €900 which shows how crazy F1 is!)
Riley is looking to move into full size cars next year, and he needs help with finding sponsors. For now, he is trying to defend the title one last time.
